Protozoal Development and Natural Purification of Flowing Sewage

A large volume of literature has accumulated ?n the "self-purification" of sewage-contaminated streams and rivers, and the process of purification Under these conditions has been reported to be one to factors such as the turbulence and speed of flow of the polluted waters, the depth and type of the bed of the watercourse, the extent of dilutlQn, sedimentation, surface area, sunlight, temperature, bacteria, bacteriophage, protozoa, algae and aquatic plants (Hulwa, 1884; Kinnicutt, Winslow and Pratt, 1919; Adeney, 1928; Babbitt, 1947; Gray, 1951; & Wat. Pollut. Abstr., 1930Further information is necessary for a fuller explanation of the process, and we have recently made some observations which may be interest in considering the biological mechanism of the natural purification of sewage.
